Ready for your summer adventure? Contiki reveals the hottest spots millennials are booking for summer vacation.
Greek Islands
Move over Caribbean, the Greek Islands is the new hotspot for young Canadians looking for a suncation. These sun-kissed islands topped the list as the place where young Canadians will be travelling to this summer, and they have voted with their passports. Flocking specifically to the beating heart of the ‘Cyclades islands’ – which feature Mykonos, Santorini and Ios – it’s no wonder why everyone is going on a Greek Island Hopping adventure to satisfy their souls thanks to the region’s history laced mythical tales, storybook streets, pristine waters and sun-bleached ruins. From getting lost in the narrow laneways of Mykonos town to filling your belly with gyros overlooking the world-famous multi-hued sunset in Oia, get ready for your big, fat Greek vacation!
Africa
Considered to be one of the “last frontiers” in travel, the vast continent of Africa has long fascinated explorers looking for an unfiltered adventure and there’s a reason why it comes in at a close second with Canadians looking for that epic summer vacation. Because there’s adventure, and then there’s Africa. If you’ve never walked its sweeping plains, witnessed its jaw-dropping wildlife (and no, driving to African Lion Safari doesn’t count), explored its ancient cultures or camped beneath its star-swept skies, it’s difficult to understand. Thrill-seekers heading there for the first-time should explore the eastern and southern parts of the continent first. Think spotting lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants and Cape buffalos (aka. the ‘Big 5’) at Kruger National Park in South Africa, taking in a peaceful, once-in-a-lifetime hot air balloon safari over the Masai Mara region of Kenya, meeting the elusive East African gorilla in Uganda, climbing Mount Kilimanjaro and luxury camping under the sparkling skies of the Serengeti in Tanzania. Be prepared to be forever changed.
Ireland
From rolling green hills to its Game of Thrones-esque castles, Ireland is truly a magical place that’s steeped in myth and legend. Young Canadians will be spending their summers on the Emerald Isle thanks to its craic-ing spirit and contrary to popular belief about its rain, long stretches of sunshine during the solstice. IG-worthy scenery, lively street festivals, Guinness and whiskey, good food beyond potatoes and surfing the Wild Atlantic Way – did we also mention Guinness – what’s not to love about Ireland?
Italy
Irresistible food, amazing architecture, incredible art and stunning scenery, it’s no wonder why the la dolce vita life of Italy is so inviting. With the art-filled cities of Rome, Venice and Florence, the wine region of Tuscany and the stylish sophistication of Cinque Terre, Milan and Lake Como, Italy really does have an abundance to offer. Get up close and personal with Rome’s cool Trastevere neighbourhood, savour a wine and mozzarella tasting with the Amalfi Coast in the background, laze by Capri’s crystal blue waters and sip an Italian espresso as you people watch away the day.
Thailand
Friendly, inviting and beautiful, Thailand is a perennial favourite among young Canadians and it’s no wonder why they continue to explore this country. Imagine sipping sunset cocktails on beautiful Railay Beach, hunting for souvenirs at the Chiang Mai night bazaar, hitting the Bangkok bars, browsing the Floating Market, climbing Doi Suthep, getting spiritual at Wat Arun and exploring the ruins of Sukhothai Old City, Thailand’s ancient former capital. And don’t get us started on Thai Island Hopping, you’ll think you died and went to tropical paradise.
Spain
Flamboyant, charismatic and enchanting, Spain has captured young Canadians’ heart, soul and taste buds this summer. Combining a heady mix of awe inspiring architecture, mouth-watering food, bronzed beaches and lush countryside, a “Spanish Spree” across a melting pot of sights, tastes and experiences is just what summer vacations are made of. Whether you’re after culture in Barcelona, food in Seville, history at the Alhambra in Granada or spending the day at La Concha beach in San Sebastián to top up your tan, the land of the legendary tapas and siestas has a plethora of options just waiting to dazzle you.
Peru
From the dizzying heights of the Andes to the depths of Canyon del Colca, one thing is clear: Canadians are flocking to Peru for their summer adventures. And it’s not just because of the llamas, though TBH, they are a big draw. This diverse South American nation has an abundance of landmarks, many of which are among the world’s seminal sights and it means your Peru panorama trek will be amazingly varied. Whether you’re after a stirring trip back in time at the Chachapoyan site of Kuelap, feel like hitting a few Cusco restaurants to sample true Incan flavours, or are set on taking the Inca trail to mesmerizing Machu Picchu, you’ll come home with #NoRegrets and a lifetime of memories and friends.
