In what is the first retrospective ever dedicated to Jean Paul Gaultier’s incredible career which began with his first ready-to-wear collection in 1976, the exhibition titled, The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk, will celebrate his avant-guarde style and highlight his eclectic sources of inspiration. Organized by the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, 120 carefully selected haute couture dresses and ready-to-wear pieces will explore his close ties to music, dance, cinema and television, including his relationship with artists like Madonna, Lady Gaga, and Kylie Minogue.
In addition to the designs, the exhibition will also feature sketches done by Gaultier for theatre and the movies, as well as audiovisual clips of concerts, ballets and fashion shows. Some original fashion photography and contemporary art photography will be shown, including never-before-seen published prints from artists like Andy Warhol, Mario Testino and David LaChapelle. Another dimension to the exhibition is a soundtrack, which has been put together by a music producer and sound illustrator.
Kicking off in Montreal the exhibition will run from June 17 to October 2, 2011, then moves to the Dallas Museum of Art (November 13 to February 12, 2012) and finishes at the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco (March 24 to August 19, 2012).
