Hotel We Love: ALT Hotel Toronto Pearson

This basic luxury hotel is an affordable, yet stylish option close to the airport.

Just last week we had the opportunity to visit the newly opened ALT Hotel, located at Toronto’s Pearson Airport. The first of its kind build outside of Quebec, this basic luxury hotel is all about being sparse on added extras, yet high on style. Their motto appears brightly as you walk through the doors on the television screen: “We do less.” It’s not really about less, per se, it’s about offering guests the basic luxuries you want in a hotel, without the extra add-ons that wrack on the room rate (think valet parking and 24-hour room service). But really, how much do those things really matter when you’re planning a quick over-night trip or are stuck on a layover?

The unique collective art mural in the lobby.

With 13 floors and 153 rooms, the hotel is located in a prime location, literally steps away from the LINK train line that runs every five minutes, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, so it’s super convenient to get to. In terms of room offerings, ALT Hotel has two options — their Focus Room which is ideal for single travellers and couples, and the Versatile Room, which is suited for 3-4 adults or a maximum of 2 adults and 2 children.

A Focus Room.

Both rooms offer the same fabulous amenities including Egyptian cotton bedding, a cozy goose down duvet, iHome alarm clock, flat screen TV, work area with multi-plug connectivity panel, a sleek Italian-designed Calla armchair, and Fruits and Passions bath products. The main difference between the Focus and Versatile Rooms are the Focus room has one Queen-sized bed and the bathroom has a walk-in shower only. The Versatile room offers a bit more space, two Queen beds, and the bathroom contains a tub. Another bonus amenity we appreciate is free WiFi — and you don’t need any annoying codes to use it either.

When you’re not in the room sleeping (or working), the hotel offers some areas for relaxing and dining. Off the lobby is Stop by Altcetera, a grab and go food area that sells both hot and cold meals that you can dine on right there or bring back to your room. Nearby is a pool table and more seating, so you can relax a bit before you flight or before bed. For those who want to keep up their workout routine, there is a 24-hour gym on the 14th floor.

With cutting-edge design being a huge part of the ALT Hotel’s DNA, they created a unique piece of collective artwork that can be found in the lobby. They obtained 80,000 images via Instagram, inspired by a daily colour theme with participants submitting images from around the world during a two-week period. The final installation also includes LCD screens, which displays not only contest photos, but real time photos from Instagram from users who use the tag #ALTEXPO. So cool, right??

Another aspect of the hotel we love is the eco-features they have included into their design, including motion detection sensors in the hallways that reduces lighting when not in use, and geothermal heating and cooling.

Thinking you might like to check in on your next business trip to the city? Or maybe you have a long layover in Toronto. Whatever the case, we highly suggest checking this hotel out. Plus with rates starting at $149 a night, every day, all year-round, you really can’t beat it.
