Why checkout when you could lounge in bed a few more hours, another night or even another week? Sounds like a dream, right? It’s not. Melbourne’s Art Series Hotels are making it a reality for its guests with their new Overstay Checkout program.
The hotel asks some of the very questions we have found ourselves pondering, “Why do hotels make you check out at 11am if the next guest’s not arriving till 6pm? What if no one’s booked in for the next night? Why do you have to check out at all?”
Their solution: if no one checks into that room, you don’t have to check out.
How it works is on the morning of your departure you give reception a ring and request an Overnight Checkout. Once you do they’ll let you know if you have a few hours or even another day before you have to go. The coolest part about this whole Overnight Checkout is they haven’t posed a limit on the number of nights you can stay. So potentially you could call the next morning and do the entire thing all over again.
There are a few stipulations you should be aware of. First, you have to be staying one of the three Art Series Hotels between December 16, 2012 to January 13, 2013. You must make your call between 8am and 11am, and it’s on a first call, first serve basis — so in this case the early bird will catch a potentially sweet worm, so to speak.
The three Melbourne hotels that are part of the Art Series Hotels include The Cullen Hotel, a boutique property which is inspired by contemporary Australian artist Adam Cullen. There’s also the Art Series flagship hotel, The Olsen, found on the city’s prestigious Chapel Street, with 229 five-star suites to choose from, outfitted with works from landscape artist Dr. John Olsen. Let’s not forget the spa and two restaurants too. Last but certainly not least is The Blackman Hotel, built within and above the historic Airlie Mansion. It contains 209 guest rooms and suites, many of which feature private terraces, as well as its home to two of the Melbourne’s hottest restaurants.
Touting themselves as having the “World’s Latest Checkout,” considering the most we’ve ever got are a couple hours, we’re thinking this may be a program other hotels should start — stat.
