When you visit Buenos Aires, we highly recommend putting shopping on your to- do list. For one, the exchange rate gives tourists a lot of bang for their buck. One Canadian dollar is worth about three times the amount here, so getting a bargain is an understatement. Leather goods, such as shoes, bags, wallets and belts are also a must-buy thanks to the abundance of cattle grazing the plains, a big part of what the country is also famous for – beef.

When it comes to shopping districts, the most eclectic and unique experience you’ll find is in Palermo. The neighbourhood is broken down into three areas: Palermo Hollywood, Palermo Soho and Palermo Viejo.

We started our shopping mid-day; dining at the organic restaurant Bio located in Palermo Hollywood, which was a much-needed break from the largely carnivorous menu we had been indulging in. The food was fresh and light, with delicious options we loved including quinoa risotto, vegetable burrito, and dozens of salads to choose from. It was probably our favourite lunch meal of the trip.

After filling our tummy’s with light food we wandered over to the epicentre of the neighbourhood, stopping in at the paper store Papelera Palermo, which had lovely handmade stationery like journals, address books and postcards. We also popped into Chocolate, and made a few purchases after being lured in by the cute dresses in the window. Modern and fashion-forward, this shop caters to the girl who reads her magazines and is looking for something that’s on trend, but is high quality too.

If you’re looking to buy some footwear, then stop into Mishka, where you’ll find a plentiful selection of on-trend shoes from cute embellished flats, to pretty pumps and bold booties.

Another shoe and accessories store to visit is Prüne. Trendy leather bags, shoes and jackets are to be found here, but if you’re looking for a leather deal, you won’t find it at a chain. It’s easy to find, since they have multiple locations across the city including one in the Alto Palermo shopping centre. The mall is an option if you’re looking for a one-stop shop and interested in checking out some of the local brands.

We also took a peek into Rapsodia, a South American chain that is basically their version of Anthropologie meets Urban Outfitters. A wall of jeans, cute tees, skirts, dresses filled the shelves and of course you’ll find many accessories including necklaces, rings and tons of scarves.

For contemporary, easy on the wallet clothes, check out Paula Cahen D’anvers. Similar to a Forever 21 or Zara, you’ll find plenty of on-trend basics from jeans and tops to accessories.

Tip: Many stores offer tax-free shopping for tourists. Just look out for the blue and white logo on the door. If you don’t see one, just ask.
