Currently Coveting: April Must-Haves

With spring full steam ahead (the weather might be lagging just a bit), we thought it was the perfect time to launch a new monthly feature in which we showcase products, hotels, exhibits, festivals — really anything we’re currently coveting that we think you’d like to know about. Thankfully there is plenty to get excited about this April. Between the recently launched Tom Ford perfume to the newly opened The NoMad Hotel in New York City, this month is looking pretty hot.

The NoMad Hotel, New York City
Officially opening its doors April 1, you can find this 168-room luxury hotel on the corner of Broadway, just north of Madison Square Park. The interiors have been done by French designer Jacques Garcia, which were inspired by the Parisian flat of his youth. The feel is very residential, but you’ll discover plush amenities including Argan bath amenities by Côté Bastide, linens and bathrobes from Sferra and Frette, complimentary WiFi throughout and laptops and iPads available to borrow on request. Thankfully you won’t have to travel far to get a great meal, as the hotel is home to five different dining spaces with the food and beverage overlooked by acclaimed Chef-Partner Daniel Humm. We’re particularly excited to check out the Library, which becomes an evening cocktail destination. Reserve now because opening rates are starting at $295/room.

Valentine K “Nova Hoodie” in Lavender
Created by Canadian designer Lauren McLachlan, Valentine K is a line of luxury cashmere sweaters in bright and fresh shades accented with hand-picked leather and suedes. You’ll find hoodies, cardigans and pullovers in a plethora of stand-out colours like lime and ocean blue, to classic hues like grey and cream. Available in select boutiques across the country including Yorkville’s TNT, we think these sweaters are the perfect travel accessory.

Stylemint Rodeo Sunglasses in “Tortoise”
The members-only commerce site Stylemint, which just hit the Canadian market late 2011, has now expanded its ultra successful line of tees, designed by Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, to sunglasses. The Spring 2012 capsule includes two styles: the Rodeo, which is an oversized cat eye frame and the Waverly, a modified wayfarer. Our eye is on the Rodeo in tortoise and retailing for $30, it’s a total steal too.

Chanel Le Vernis Nail Colour in “June”
Not sure what colour to dip your nails into next? We have a recent hankering for pastel-like hues and when we spotted Chanel’s month specific line of shades we were smitten. Although “June” has been created to wear in that month, we wanted to get a head start on the summer with this tasty sorbet hue. Available at shop.nordstrom.com for $27 or at Chanel boutiques.

Rag & Bone “Newport” Platform Sandals
Thankfully for our feet the platform is still in full swing for summer and designers have been playing around with a new material you might want to try. On trend for spring, cork is not only comfortable, but environmentally-friendly too. Cork can actually be harvested from a tree without causing damage. We love how they look on these killer Rag & Bone platforms that we know we’ll wear all summer long. Available at shopbop.com for $466.

Tom Ford Lavender Palm Eau du Parfum
There’s something about lavender that gives makes us feel happy, so when we heard Tom Ford was coming out with a new lavender-based perfume we were beyond excited. Using two varieties of the flower, you’ll also sniff bright citrus notes, as well as palm leaf accord, clary sage and woody notes. The eau de parfum is currently available at Holt Renfrew and retails for $540 for 250ml.

Yves Saint Laurent: The Retrospective, Denver Art Museum
If you haven’t had the chance to see the Yves Saint Laurent retrospective, this is your last chance to catch the exhibit on from March 25 – July 8, 2012 at the Denver Art Museum. You’ll be able to view 40 years of the renowned designer’s work including his haute couture gowns, celebrity clients outfits and select photographs and films.

New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival
We can think of more than a few reasons to attend this Jazz Festival, including a diverse lineup of bands including Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, Florence and the Machine, Bon Iver, Esperanza Spalding and headliner Herbie Hancock. It’s also a great opportunity to indulge in some Southern fare and find treasures created by local artisans.
