It’s hard not to be envious of those Norwegians. As one of the happiest countries in the world (it was Number 2 this year on the UN’s report), high quality of life, beautiful landscapes, natural wonders — now Norway can also they have the most beautiful looking passport ever created.

The passport was a winning design created by the Oslo firm, Neue Design Studio. Norway’s National Police Directorate launched the competition back in February looking for designs that not only were functional and beautiful, but was able to implement security measures. Neue drew from the natural beauty of Norway, using simplified depictions of the landscape in pastel shades.

When it came to the security measures, when the passport is shone under a UV light the landscapes transform to show the Northern Lights in the night sky (impressive, right?). The jury praised the design design, saying, “The concept is the competition’s most subtle and stylish solution, and positively separates itself from the competing submissions. Aesthetically, the landscape motifs have been given a distinctive look. The jury appreciates the simplicity of the solution.”

Unfortunately Norwegians will have to wait a little bit until they can get their hands on their new passport. The security details will need to be ironed out first, but likely it will come out within the next year or two.
