What to Pack for a Winter Getaway

What to Pack for a Winter Getaway

It's all about layers when it comes to packing for a chilly destination.

Many of you are probably packing for a tropical getaway (who doesn’t want to escape the cold), but who says winter getaways are such a terrible thing? We recently shared some of the best destinations for both skiers and non-ski bunnies, proving that tons of fun can be had in the snow (or curled up next to a fireplace). Packing for these chilly destinations can be tough. Besides needing like a million layers, winter clothes are hardly compact and there’s really no alternative for being warm. Read on to find out what beauty and fashion pieces you should consider packing for your winter getaway.

1. North Face Cheakamus Triclimate Jacket in Pamplona Purple, $400, thenorthface.com
As we mentioned, winter packing is all about the layering and what we love about this jacket is that it comes with two-layers that allows you to wear 3 different ways, . Waterproof and breathable, the inner liner is removable, so if it’s not too cold you’ll still be protected from the elements. Opt to get a size one up than usual as we hear it runs a tad small.

2. Clarins UV Plus Day Screen SPF 40, $38, blissworld.com
Sunscreen is the most important beauty product you’ll want to pack. While you may not be exposing your entire body in the sun, in the winter the sun is closer to the earth so its rays are stronger. Not only that, but snow majorly reflects the light (about 80% of the ultraviolet light that hits it) and adding to that is the higher your elevation the more your ultraviolet exposure increases. Bottom line – slather that sunscreen on!

3. Wilfred Free Nord Sweater, $145, aritzia.com
The best thing after a long day on the slopes (or out in the cold), is wrapping yourself in a cozy sweater and sipping some hot chocolate. We love the Fair Isle design on this Wilfred Free sweater and since it’s part wool and alpaca, it’s ultra warm. Since wool can be scratchy, they’ve treated it to a special wash, so it’s soft on the skin.

4. M. Miller Cashmere Hat, $240, sportinglife.ca
While we love our headbands and earmuffs, we are way warmer when we’re out in the cold for long periods of time when we have a hat on. We think you should stay chic and cozy with this gorgeous cashmere hat complete with a fur pom pom.

5. Lucas Hugh Highline stretch top, $300, net-a-porter.com
Layers, layers, layers. You have to start with a thin, yet breathable base and we think this is just the top. Stylish enough that you can wander around the chalet minus your jacket, its actually lined with a lightweight fleece and even has an earphone eyelet to let you listen to your tunes while you crush the hills.

6. Phenix Excellence Glove Womens, $150, sportchek.ca
Mitts are cute for the rink, but we prefer gloves for the slopes. Made with a stretchy fabric, this pair is waterproof, breathable and the outside lining is super quick drying.

7. Teva Jordanelle in black, $170, teva.com
Your suitcase space is premium, especially when you’re flying the skies, which is why we love these super cute and ultra-light boots (they weigh half of your average boot and can compress to the size of a normal shoe). The shell is waterproof, while the removable liner is perfect for walking around the cabin post-ski. We did our own test and they are seriously warm even though they’re slim and compact.

8. Benetint Lip Balm SPF 15, $20, benefitcosmetics.com
A great lip balm is one of our travel must-haves, and even more of an essential during the winter months. We suggest opting for a balm with SPF to avoid getting burned lips and a touch of colour doesn’t hurt either. This version from Benefit is the perfect berry shade and leaves you with a pretty glow.
