The Vibe: A frequent for celebrities, big spenders and the all-around cool set, the Thompson Toronto is that hotel that has a hip and trendy vibe right from the moment you step into the lobby (that’s decked out in cool artwork, obviously). Home to a swanky lobby bar, an exclusive member-and-hotel-guest-only rooftop bar and pool, plus two restaurants to tickle either you fancy side (book a table at Parisian-themed Colette Grand Café), or your comfort food side (slip into a shiny red booth at the Thompson Diner), the Thompson Toronto is where you’ll find Toronto’s in-the-know crowd and chilled out celebs looking to get away from the typical downtown hotel scene. It’s cool without being unapproachable, luxe but sill comfortable, and totally on-trend.
The Facts: Set just west of the main downtown core of Toronto, the Thompson Toronto is built amongst historic factory buildings in the happening King West neighbourhood lending to its hip vibe. The 102 rooms on the 10 floors all come with floor-to-ceiling windows to showcase some of the best views of Toronto’s skyline and Lake Ontario, but to really get a glimpse of the famed CN Tower, head up to the exclusive roof-top bar with a 40-foot infinity pool. Rooms also come with Nespresso machines, Wi-Fi, luxe amenities like plush robes, heated bathroom floors and docking stations for your iPod.
The Experience: As soon as you check in you feel the cool but laid back vibe, from the friendly check in service to the unique art pieces you’ll find in the lobby. But once you’re in your room you can’t beat the views of either the city or the lake. Or the actual room itself. It was a chore to try and pull away from the bed after padding around in slippered feet and bathrobe on to actually go downstairs for dinner. The rooms are inviting in white, rich dark hardwood flooring, shots of deep purple in chairs and cushions — a mini oasis in the big, bustling city.
But a trip to the on-site restaurant is indeed a must. Book yourself a table at Colette and you won’t be disappointed. The Parisian-themed restaurant is a chic coffee and bake shop by day, but come evening it’s a pretty setting for dinner — not to mention the food on the menu is top notch (try the oysters, the goat cheese and beet salad, and the steak and frites and you won’t go wrong). It’s also a great spot for people watching — frequented by local hockey stars, celebrities and more it’s a who’s-who of Toronto on a Friday night.
Heading up to the rooftop bar around 9:00pm means you’ll be sipping on hand-made cocktails, lounging in comfy seats, or pool-side while taking in the city lights. The perfect night-cap before ducking under the covers of your plush king size bed.
Room to Book: With some of the best views of the city skyline you’d be missing out if you didn’t book a room with an impressive view. The Thompson suite is that perfect mix between overt-the-top luxury in a penthouse and a typical suite and it comes with floor-to-ceiling windows so you never miss out on that view. A master bedroom with one of the comfiest beds in the city (thanks to 300-thread count sheets), living room and kitchenette make this feel cozy and home-like more than your typical hotel room.
