You’ve mastered the red lip (and it’s become your go-to while travelling for a night out), but now you’re ready to take on the hottest fall and winter lip trend – dark berry, burgundies, raisins and even purples. It’s a great idea in theory, but how can you actually pull it off, look on-trend, but still fresh this season? Caitlin Callahan, senior artist for M.A.C cosmetics share her best tips for finally pulling off that dark lip.

1. Opt for deep berries, purples and burgundies to stay current this season, says Callahan. Her top picks? M.A.C lipsticks in Sin, Diva, Living Legend, Rebel and Smoked Purple. “Makeup artists at M.A.C counters say these shades are all flying off the shelves!”

2. Hunt down your perfect dark lip shade by easing into the darker realm, and picking a colour you feel drawn to and most comfortable with. Then have fun testing it out. “You can try a stain but the mattes are so hot right now,” says Callahan. “If it feels like too much, try a darker gloss and softly pat on.”

3. As with a great red lip, keeping the rest of your makeup minimal and simple is key to looking fresh and modern (otherwise you’ll be venturing into more of an ‘80s look). Just know that a deep, dark lip is a makeup commitment and you’ll need to just go with it. “The chicest thing to do is wear only foundation and concealer with a dark lip,” says Callahan. “Maybe a touch of taupe shading under the cheekbone. But most of us still want or need a few strokes of mascara to feel alive!”

4. A long-lasting lip colour is as high on our travel must-have list as a cozy cashmere scarf. Especially with a darker lip shade. “First, accept the fact there will be some maintenance required,” advises Callahan. “Then, always use a lip primer like M.A.C Cosmetics Prep + Prime Lip. Don’t apply too much, one layer of lipstick is enough and will last longer.”

5. What do you need to travel with to pull off and maintain that luscious dark lipstick? Just three things. “A mirror (a table knife does the trick in a pinch!), a lip liner and a lip brush,” says Callahan. “Dark and red lips are a bit more maintenance, but so worth it!”
