Restaurant Review: STK Meatpacking

A modern take on the traditional steakhouse, this hotspot is part-lounge, part-club.

The Vibe: STK effortlessly melds a chic lounge into their formal dining space, leaving diners with pre- and post-dinner experience all in one. The decor errs on the side of masculine with plaster cast horns protruding out of the wall above the bar, white leather banquettes and faux leather walls. The crowd is a mix of after-work business types, out-of-towners and partyers looking to get their night started.

The Facts: This is the brand’s flagship location, with outposts in Las Vegas, London and Miami. Here you’ll also find a rooftop bar with seating for 115, open in the summer months with views of the Hudson River and New Jersey. As you would hope, steak is the restaurant’s main attraction. For petite appetites or the waistline-conscious eaters you’ll find three sizes of cuts starting with small (6 oz.) portions, all the way up to 32 oz. slabs.

The Experience: Don’t plan on having an intimate dinner for two here. It’s a lively spot with a DJ spinning tunes and the front bar is always full of patrons waiting to be seated for dinner or gearing up for a night on the town. Although we had a reservation, our table wasn’t ready, so we had time to grab a glass of wine at the bar. We made the mistake of trying to sit on a lounge chair only to be told it was reserved seating. Shortly after we were seated at a booth further in the back, which we appreciated as the night went on and the front bar slowly transformed itself into more of a club than laid-back lounge.

STK-steak

Start With: Hearts of Romaine, $14
A deconstructed Caesar salad, it was simple, yet delicious start to our meal.

Entrée With: Filet Medallion (6 oz.), $37 & Parmesan Truffle Fries, $12
We appreciated having the option of deciding on our size of meat. Coming out cooked to our liking, the flavour and tenderness passed the test. The truffle fries are the perfect complement to the steak. Cut thick, they’re neatly stacked with the right amount of seasonings.

End With: Birthday Cake, $10
If you’ve managed to leave room for a sweet, try this tasty almond torte that comes with a side of cookie dough ice cream drizzled with rum vanilla cream.

Cocktail of Choice: Pink Elegance, $16
A mix of grey goose, Processco and strawberries, this girly concoction is just the right amount of sweet. Plus you’ll feel good knowing a portion of the proceeds benefits breast cancer awareness.

Table to Book: Ask for a booth in the back to minimize the buzz from the bar.

Insider Tip: The front lounge is all reserved seating except for the bar, so if you’re sipping on a cocktail while you wait for a table, expect to stand.
