Travel-Inspired Holiday Cocktails: Caramel Ginger Cider

Iceberg Vodka from Newfoundland gives this sweet and spicy cider cocktail a festive kick.

Full disclosure–this may just be my new favourite holiday cocktail! And trust me, it may become one of your favourites too. I’ve always been a hot apple cider fan, but this recipe really takes it up a notch. It’s creamy, sweet, spicy and warm–all things that equal holiday magic. It’s a hot apple cider with salty caramel, extra ginger and a hefty dose of vodka. (I’m also adding it to my list of other destination-inspired cocktails!).

While it’s super easy to make and just as delicious without any alcohol (so you can make a batch for kids), a splash of Iceberg Vodka makes it truly feel like an east coast holiday treat. Iceberg Vodka is made from water from the iceberg’s Newfoundland is famous for. It’s perfect for this cocktail because it doesn’t overpower the yummy flavours of the cider and adds an extra layer of warmth. If you were in Newfoundland during the holidays, you would need a warm up from the cold Atlantic air!


And on that note, Newfoundland is definitely on my list of places to visit in 2021. Not just for a chance to see the icebergs at Iceberg Alley, but also to visit the small fishing villages, hike the rugged coastline, maybe see a whale or two, and visit the incomparable Fogo Island Inn. It’s a gem in Canada, that’s for sure, and with travel still a bit up-in-the-air, Canadian trips seem perfect for 2021. Sigh… this drink will help until then! 


  • Hot apple cider
  • Pinch of ground ginger 
  • 1-2 tsps of homemade caramel sauce (to make cook 1 cup of sugar until golden brown on stove, carefully mix in 2 tbsps of butter and 1/2 cup of cream) 
  • 1 ounce of Iceberg Vodka 
  • Cinnamon stick for garnish
  1. Stir all ingredients together well in a cocktail glass with a cinnamon stick.
